Paul Lawrence, 51, was fatally injured on Gladonian Road in Wick, near Littlehampton, in the early hours of January 28. An inquest revealed that Lawrence, a plumber and gas engineer, sustained a head injury consistent with a fall.

A 16-year-old from Littlehampton was initially arrested on suspicion of murder and has been released on bail with conditions until October 10, pending further investigation.

A second 16-year-old from Littlehampton has now been arrested on similar charges, including murder and malicious communications. He has been released on bail with conditions until October 9.

Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team stated, “We are dedicated to achieving justice for Paul and his family. We urge anyone with information to come forward. If you have details about the events leading to Paul’s death or any information that might assist our investigation, please report it online or call 101, quoting Operation Sett.”

Campbell also advised against speculation or social media posts that could affect the fairness of the trial.

Paul’s family has paid tribute to the “kind” and “gentle” grandfather. His daughters, Louise and Josephine, described him as a true role model: “Paul was kind, generous, and always smiling with reassuring eyes. He was our hero, our strength, and our everything. A devoted family man, he took immense pride in his children and grandchildren. He was a gentle soul, full of happiness, and deeply loved by all.”

Paul’s siblings, John and Shelley, remembered him as the kindest man with a bright smile and infectious laugh: “Paul could light up any room with his presence. We are deeply heartbroken by his loss.”

His mother, Marie, expressed her profound grief: “My lovely son Paul, I’m shattered. I loved him so much and can’t imagine life without him.”

Paul’s stepdaughter Chloe reflected on his special qualities: “Paul’s ability to love me as his own was his greatest quality. It takes a great man to be a dad, but an even greater man to be a stepdad.”
