Manager Mark Bonner shared his insights into why Gillingham struggled to gain momentum against Fleetwood on Saturday.
Despite the Gills’ strong defensive performance and their ability to minimize clear-cut chances, they faced challenges in maintaining possession and building attacks, especially during the first hour of the match.
Bonner acknowledged that while he was pleased to secure a point against a tough Fleetwood side, his team found it difficult to apply pressure high up the pitch. He noted that Gillingham frequently lost possession too quickly, relying more on counter-attacks than sustained periods of control.
However, Bonner felt that his team finished the match strongly, looking more likely to score in the final 10 minutes. He appreciated their determination to chase the game, but admitted that the team lacked confidence throughout much of the match.
“We made it a really tough afternoon for ourselves, and Fleetwood’s quality players certainly added to that challenge,” Bonner commented. “This game, along with the upcoming matches, serves as a real benchmark for where we are as a team and highlights the areas we need to improve.”
A tactical adjustment in the second half allowed Gillingham to regain some control, with the introduction of players like Aaron Rowe helping to carry the ball higher up the pitch. Bonner explained that a slight change in their pressing strategy helped them push Fleetwood back, offering a valuable lesson for future games.
He also pointed out that Gillingham has yet to find their rhythm but expressed confidence that the team will improve as the season progresses. Bonner highlighted the difficulties faced in controlling the midfield, particularly against Fleetwood’s open play style, which created large distances for Gillingham’s midfielders to cover.
