The Criterion Cafe was a staple of the city’s food and drink scene having been long-established in the Gallowgate for decades.

It has since closed and now it has been put on the market for offers over £25,000.

Business agents Smith & Clough say the restaurant is an ‘ideal’ chance for a new owner to take on a nicely refurbished spot with good passing trade in the city.

The Criterion Cafe became known for potentially serving the cheapest fish supper in Glasgow at just £4.95.

Paddy Quinn took over the cafe in 2023 from the previous owner who retired, and he wanted to keep the name to preserve its legacy and reputation in the city.

Paddy, who also ran the Kent Fish and Chip Shop in Finnieston, soon realised that the two locations were very different and he had to do things a bit differently in the East End.

He decided to offer chippies at a price that wouldn’t break the bank during the cost-of-living crisis and bring customers a sense of community and togetherness during such difficult times.

The Criterion became known for its offerings of an angel haddock supper at under a fiver.

Paddy previously told GlasgowLive: “In this climate, it takes a brave/stupid person to open a business, but I just felt the area needed a community cafe where everyone can meet have a coffee or tea and a bite to eat at a reasonable price, and that it would give me great pleasure in seeing the locals young and old talking about past and present.”
