Hospitals, carers and local authorities have been told to prepare for “significant impacts” as the scorching heatwave enters its fifth day.

The UK’s Health Security Agency and Met Office issued a yellow alert for the increased risk to vulnerable people in what meteorologists predict will be 27-degree heat today.

A statement issued by the two organisations said those aged above 65, or with health conditions, are more likely to feel the effects – but younger people could also be impacted.

It said temperatures in hospitals and care homes could be so hot that clinical risk assessments would not be passed.

Brighton beach has been packed with sunbathers this week while strong lightning storms could be seen over the Channel due to the high temperatures.

Tuesday marked the hottest day of the year in the UK with the mercury soaring to 32 degrees.
