Inspectors discovered that Care Pro South East, which operates homes throughout Bexhill, was cited for lacking smoke detectors and having faulty fire doors, endangering residents. The company, which serves individuals with learning disabilities and autism, was also found negligent in conducting necessary risk assessments.
A spokesperson from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service highlighted the severity of the case, describing it as among the most serious they’ve prosecuted. During inspections in October and November 2022, deficiencies such as missing smoke alarms at Eden Lodge on Egerton Road prompted authorities to prohibit residents from sleeping there until alarms were installed.
Similar issues, including inadequate risk assessments and maintenance problems, were identified at other properties like Park Apartments, Park View on Egerton Road, and Beau Lodge on Jameson Road, Bexhill.
Company directors Thuraisamy Ravichandran and Radha Ravichandran pleaded guilty to 12 fire safety offenses. Judge Tessa Szagun, presiding at Brighton Magistrates’ Court, imposed fines totaling £110,000 on the company and mandated £14,455 in costs. She emphasized that the owners should have familiarized themselves with applicable regulations and guidance when providing such services.
Craig Williams, enforcement manager at East Sussex Fire and Rescue, underscored the gravity of the case, citing multiple violations across various premises. The court’s substantial fine reflects the seriousness of these breaches, reminding property owners of potential severe penalties, including unlimited fines and possible imprisonment.
George O’Reilly, head of fire safety at East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, emphasized their commitment to prosecuting those who jeopardize lives through fire safety oversights, stressing the importance of compliance with legislation to prevent harm.
