“Former Lewes council leader Mr. MacCleary defeats Ms. Caulfield, securing a substantial majority of over 12,000 votes after a narrow loss in 2019.

Ms. Caulfield, a prominent supporter of Boris Johnson, steps down after holding the seat for nine years.

Mr. MacCleary, also serving as a Lewes District and East Sussex County councillor, regains the Lib Dem-Tory marginal seat previously lost when Lib Dem Norman Baker was defeated by Ms. Caulfield in 2015.

In 2019, Ms. Caulfield secured reelection with a slim majority of less than 3,000 votes.

Mr. MacCleary has pledged to advocate vigorously for Lewes, Seaford, and other communities within the constituency.

His victory coincides with a broader trend where several Lib Dem MPs triumphed over Conservative candidates along the Sussex coast, including additional Tory ministers.

One of the notable results of the evening was Gillian Keegan’s loss to Lib Dem Jess Brown-Fuller in Chichester.

In Eastbourne, Josh Babarinde OBE wrested the constituency from Caroline Ansell.

The Lib Dems also achieved victories in Mid Sussex and Horsham.”Source link
