William Miller slashed Ryan Greer in his head and hand after the pair got in an argument while drinking at Miller’s flat in the middle of the day.
Miller, of Whitehawk Close in Brighton, left Mr Greer bleeding heavily and calling for help.
Miller has been convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent after a trial at Chichester Crown Court.
The court heard how Miller, 43, attacked Mr Greer at around 12.30pm on July 14, 2023, in his flat then fled the scene.
People living in the area overheard Mr Greer’s calls for help, gave him first aid and called 999.
On arrival paramedics and detectives saw a trail of blood from Whitehawk Close to Miller’s flat, but he was nowhere to be found.
Following a social media appeal by Sussex Police, Miller handed himself in to John Street Police Station in Brighton three days later, holding the weapon used in the attack.
Miller pleaded not guilty to GBH with intent but was convicted by a jury on June 27.
Sussex Police investigator Emily Farley said: “The attack on the victim by Miller was a horrifying event that left the victim with life-threatening injuries and ongoing medical needs.
“As we move towards sentencing, we hope this brings a sense of closure and relief to the victim, who has shown incredible resilience throughout this ordeal.
“We are committed to protecting our community and ensuring that perpetrators of such violent acts are held accountable.”
Miller was remanded in custody to await sentencing at a later date.
