Figma Temporarily Disables AI Design Feature Similar to Apple’s Weather App
Dylan Field, CEO of Figma, announced the temporary suspension of its “Make Design” AI feature amidst allegations that it was replicating designs from Apple’s Weather app. The issue, highlighted by Andy Allen of NotBoring Software, raised concerns about the tool generating UI layouts resembling existing apps when prompted.
Initially touted as a tool to quickly translate design ideas into visual drafts, Make Design was unveiled at Figma’s Config conference. Field clarified on X that the feature wasn’t trained on Figma content or app designs, countering claims of data training issues.
Despite these assurances, the discovery prompted Figma to disable the feature pending a thorough quality assurance review. Field acknowledged oversight in the QA process due to rushed development to meet conference deadlines.
The move reflects broader industry concerns about AI’s impact on design jobs and innovation, with some designers fearing automation could homogenize creativity while others view it as a tool for streamlining repetitive tasks.
