“Conservative Campaign Volunteer Assaulted While Posting Election Posters”
Leila Williams, a Conservative candidate for East Worthing and Shoreham, has condemned the recent assault on a volunteer from Sompting who was placing General Election campaign posters in Upper Brighton Road, Worthing. The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, resulted in the volunteer, a male councillor, sustaining a head injury and requiring hospitalization.
In response to the attack, Williams has decided to halt the placement of campaign posters by her supporters, citing concerns over potential violence and intimidation. A 63-year-old man was subsequently arrested on charges including affray, criminal damage, and assault causing actual bodily harm.
Expressing her dismay over the incident, Williams emphasized that such acts of violence have no place in political activities. She urged all candidates to unite in condemning such behavior and ensuring a safe electoral environment in East Worthing and Shoreham.
Sussex Police confirmed they responded to the assault report and are continuing their investigation, urging witnesses to come forward with any information relevant to the incident.
