Aarush Bakshi and Hannah Doherty, participants in the Big Noise project in Govanhill, recently spent three days in Barcelona, culminating in a performance with Gustavo Dudamel, the music director of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
The concert took place at the Palau de la Musica Catalana.
Aarush, a 17-year-old student at Shawlands Academy, expressed his excitement, saying, “Meeting all the other musicians in the orchestra was amazing. Everyone was so passionate about music, it was infectious.
“Dudamel made each of us feel welcome and encouraged us to play as if we were all in the front row. Despite mainly speaking in Spanish, he conveyed so much through his gestures. When he spoke in English, he was direct and impactful on everyone.
“The hall we performed in was beautiful, adorned with sculptures. The concert was packed yet informal. Dudamel would have us play a passage, then look at the audience, who would applaud. It was really cool.
“Playing alongside such talented musicians from different places was incredible. It was inspiring to see others so dedicated to music.”
Hannah, 17, a student at Holyrood Secondary School, described the experience as hugely exciting.
“It was amazing to meet so many new people from around the world and to experience the vibrant city of Barcelona. The high standard of musicianship encouraged me to raise my level of playing. Everyone was welcoming and friendly, and the communication during rehearsals was clear and direct, often conveyed through expressive hand movements.
“Working with Gustavo Dudamel was very inspiring, and the experience helped me grow both as a person and as a musician.”
Aarush and Hannah were among six Scottish musicians from the project who played and rehearsed with over 200 performers from around the globe. Their performance included Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, Ode to Joy, Sonata Piano e Forte by G Gabrielli, and Deferent by Adria Aguilera.
Kate McPhail, acting head of the center at Big Noise Govanhill, emphasized the impact of such opportunities. “Big Noise is all about improving lives and strengthening communities. Performing with an incredible conductor and alongside international musicians was a special moment for our young people. The opportunity to travel internationally and represent their communities is a major milestone, showcasing their hard work and talent. We couldn’t be prouder.”
Gustavo Dudamel, music and artistic director of LA Phil and creator of the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, highlighted the mission behind such programs. “Our mission has always been to demonstrate how music can create positive change in the world. This experience shows these students how music transcends borders, connecting them with their peers from across Europe.”
