London, June 29, 2024 – The capital city of the United Kingdom witnessed a colourful and lively celebration of Raja Festival, an essential Odia festival marking the onset of the agricultural season and celebrating womanhood. Organised by OCAL UK, this 16th annual event brought together the Odia diaspora from across the UK, transforming a distant locale into a vibrant hub of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage.
The event, held at a school premise in London, was attended by numerous dignitaries, including Sumant Mansingh and Partha Sarathi Panda from the Odia Society UK (OSUK), as well as Dr. Sahadev Swain from the Shree Jagannath Society UK. Their presence added prestige to the celebration, underscoring the festival’s significance and its growing influence among the Odia community abroad.
The Shree Jagannatha Society delighted festival-goers at the London Raja Festival by offering an array of mouth-watering Odia dishes. This delicious showcase wasn’t just about indulging the taste buds; it was part of a heartfelt initiative to raise funds for the construction of a new Jagannatha temple. The community’s generosity and enthusiasm not only highlighted their culinary heritage but also underscored their collective commitment to preserving and celebrating their spiritual traditions.
Attendees were treated to an array of Odia cultural experiences, creating an atmosphere that resonated with the authentic spirit of Odisha. Traditional Odia food stalls offered a delectable variety of regional dishes, which were a major draw for the crowd. The enticing aroma of local delicacies wafting through the air added to the festivity, as participants relished the flavours reminiscent of their homeland.The food stalls, managed meticulously by Amulya Jena, Bijoy Sahoo, Jyotshna Sahoo, Anima Jena, Vani Patnaik, Satya Sidhartha, Amaresh Dhal, Ramakrishna Sabat, Subhendu Mohanty, Subhalaxmi Mohanty, and Debasmita Nayak, ensured that attendees enjoyed an authentic taste of Odisha’s culinary delights.
The cultural program featured mesmerising performances of Odissi dance, captivating the audience with the elegance and expressiveness of this classical dance form. Odia music performances further enriched the ambiance, providing a melodic backdrop that echoed through the venue, connecting attendees with their roots. This program, organised with great care by Satroopa Patnaik, Reena Meher, Umakant Rout, Devi Patnaik, Vijay Meher, and Asima Sabat, highlighted the community’s artistic heritage and brought joy to all who attended.
Children played a central role in the day’s activities, participating enthusiastically in a painting competition and a mathematics race. These events were not only entertaining but also encouraged creativity and intellectual engagement among the young participants. Winners of these competitions were awarded, acknowledging their talent and effort, and encouraging them to take pride in their cultural identity.
