A 57-year-old individual sustained severe head injuries in an alleged assault at The Dolphin and Anchor Wetherspoon pub on West Street in Chichester late Thursday evening.
A murder inquiry has been launched, with two individuals detained and a third sought by law enforcement.
According to Sussex Police, the victim, hailing from South Yorkshire, received medical attention from paramedics but was declared deceased shortly after 11 pm on June 20.
Detective Chief Inspector Suzanne Joseph expressed condolences, stating, “This incident led to the tragic death of a 57-year-old man, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. It occurred in a bustling pub in the city center, and we urge anyone with information to come forward as we work to establish the precise circumstances.”
She added, “If you witnessed the incident or have any relevant mobile or CCTV footage, please get in touch. You can report it online or call 101, citing Operation Arunside.”
The deceased’s relatives have been notified.
A 30-year-old individual from Birmingham was apprehended on suspicion of murder, and a 42-year-old from County Durham was detained on suspicion of affray. Both are in police custody.
A third individual, suspected of affray, has been identified but remains at large, with ongoing efforts to locate him.
Police presence continued in West Street, with black tents and cordons still in place as of this afternoon, resulting in diversions for buses and traffic.
