Gillingham’s Mark Bonner Envisions a Competitive League 2 Season Ahead

Gillingham manager Mark Bonner anticipates a highly competitive League 2 campaign in the upcoming season.

With significant summer transfer activities yet to unfold across the division, it’s challenging to pinpoint the frontrunners. However, early favorites according to bookmakers are Chesterfield.

Gillingham is also considered a strong contender, especially after bolstering their attacking options, addressing previous seasons’ scoring challenges. Teams like MK Dons, Notts County, and Doncaster Rovers are expected to challenge as well.

Bonner commented, “The league appears to be wide open. Some notable teams exited last year, and I commend Crawley for their impressive playoff journey.”

He added, “The open nature of the league means many clubs believe they have a chance. It will be fiercely competitive.”

Drawing early conclusions could be misleading, as seen in the previous season. Gillingham had a strong start but couldn’t sustain it, while Doncaster’s late surge into the playoffs was remarkable.

“The league is unpredictable. It’s not about the initial momentum but maintaining consistency throughout,” noted Bonner, who guided Cambridge United to promotion in 2021.

He emphasized, “Every team can defeat anyone in this league. It’s about managing inconsistencies and bouncing back quickly from setbacks.”

With multiple strong contenders like Doncaster, MK Dons, Notts County, and others in the mix, Gillingham aims to be among the frontrunners. Bonner acknowledged the excitement and challenges ahead, emphasizing the importance of consistency and resilience over the long 46-game season.
