Ivor Caplin previously represented Hove between 1997 and 2005. His suspension comes shortly after former MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle was also suspended from Labour.

Mr Caplin declined to comment.

The Argus understands that Mr Caplin is not currently a member of the Labour Party.

Having originally been elected to Hove Borough Council, Mr Caplin stood as the Labour MP for Hove for eight years.

In that time he served as a parliamentary under-secretary in the Ministry of Defence during Tony Blair’s time as Prime Minister.

Mr Caplin’s suspension comes two weeks after Lloyd Russell-Moyle was also suspended from the Labour Party – shortly before the General Election selection process.

Mr Russell-Moyle, who represented Kemptown as MP from 2017, will not be standing in this year’s General Election. Chris Ward will instead be Labour’s candidate.

Mr Russell-Moyle disputed the claims, calling them “vexatious and politically motivated”.
