Robbie Stockdale has been appointed assistant manager to Stephen Clemence at Gillingham’s League 2 rivals Barrow.

Stockdale was Clemence’s assistant coach at Gillingham, both appointed at the same time in November last year.

He was relieved of his duties when Clemence was sacked at the end of April.

Clemence took over as Barrow head coach on Friday.

Speaking after his appointment, former Rochdale boss Stockdale said: “Stephen gave me a ring late last week and having worked with him at Gillingham, I felt we did a good job there and I’m looking forward to doing a good job here.

“I’ve coached against Stephen while he was working with Steve Bruce and while I was working with David Moyes and Sam Allardyce.

“We also did our pro-licence together and worked together last season, so it’s been a long-time relationship and I think we complement each other really well.”

Gillingham have confirmed their own backroom team under new boss Mark Bonner.

Anthony Hayes has joined as assistant manager, Peter Gill joins as first-team coach and Deren Ibrahim stays on as goalkeeper coach. He worked under both Neil Harris and Clemence.

The Gills haven’t announced any role for Keith Millen, who had been looking after the B Team last season and helping out with first-team coaching. Millen was interim manager before Clemence took charge.

There won’t be a formal B Team set-up next season, with the Gills reverting back to an under-18 and a senior side.
