Brighton and Hove Green Party has selected Ollie Sykes as their candidate for the Brunswick and Adelaide by-election on July 4, coinciding with the General Election.
Sykes previously held this seat from 2011 to 2019 and served as the Green Party’s finance lead until May 2019. He also ran for Hove in the last general election, finishing fourth.
The by-election follows the resignation of Labour councillor Jilly Stevens due to ill health. Stevens, 75, was the lead on customer service and secretary to the Labour Group.
Brighton and Hove Greens assert that Sykes will ‘hold Labour to account’ in an area known for strong Green support. During his tenure, Sykes successfully opposed the Labour-led council’s plans to sell Hove Library and downland estate, and secured funding for climate action.
Brunswick and Adelaide was represented by Green councillors for 12 years before narrowly losing the seat in the last council elections.
Sykes stated, ‘As a former councillor for this area, I am ready to serve Brunswick and Adelaide residents from day one. With Labour now dominant, this by-election is a chance to push for a more progressive and Green agenda.’
Opposition leader Councillor Steve Davis praised Sykes’s record, expressing eagerness to have him rejoin the Green Group and highlighting the importance of every Green vote in a tightly contested seat.
