The Chichester District Council, acting for the South Downs National Park Authority, has approved the application for rebuilding a temple dedicated to a Roman goddess.
The original temple, located in the High Woods area of the Goodwood Estate near Chichester, was dismantled during the early 20th century. The reconstruction plans aim to use as many original stones as possible and position the temple north of the Grade-II listed lioness statue.
According to applicant Haydn Morris, the temple was originally constructed to house a Roman dedication stone, flanked by statues of Neptune and Minerva. Its design featured a classical form with visible statues and stone elements between triple-arched piers.
Morris noted that while the lioness statue is a notable Grade-II listed structure, it appears relatively small within its surrounding landscape of walls and large trees. The proposed temple reconstruction is envisioned to complement the setting, enhancing the immediate location and creating a new focal point in the parkland.
Additionally, an arch in a nearby wall will be reinstated, offering a view towards the kennels and incorporating a gate.
