“Late on Christmas night, a man was observed moving stealthily through the forest carrying a large sack. However, it wasn’t Santa Claus arriving late with a final gift; he was accompanied by another individual carrying a firearm.
Guided by the National Police Air Service helicopter, armed response officers responded to Titsey Hill near Oxted, Surrey, and conducted an armed stop, detaining the men.
During the intervention, officers confiscated an air rifle and a sack containing deceased pheasants. Anas Abdulla Azizi from Brighton and Sirwan Muhammad Salih were apprehended for poaching during nighttime hours.
Azizi, aged 21 from Ryelands Drive, and Salih, aged 40 from Strutt Street, Derby, admitted guilt at Guildford Crown Court on May 21 and were ordered to pay restitution.
Surrey Police’s spokesperson highlighted that poachers frequently operate under cover of night, using firearms and lights to hunt wildlife like pheasants, rabbits, and deer in rural areas. This illegal activity not only poses financial harm to gamekeepers, farmers, and landowners but also endangers them when confronting armed offenders.
If you suspect poaching, dial 999 immediately.”
