UK households must have a TV licence to watch or record live TV, regardless of the channel. However, if you don’t watch live TV or stream BBC iPlayer, you might qualify for a refund on your TV licence fee.
To be eligible for a refund, you should not need your licence again before it expires and must have at least one full month left on it without using it for live TV. Refunds, typically £159, can be applied for online, with processing taking about 21 days. The refund amount is calculated based on unused months left on the licence.
You do not require a TV Licence for streaming services like Netflix, on-demand platforms such as All 4, YouTube videos, or DVDs. However, you do need it for watching or recording live TV and using BBC iPlayer.
People aged 75 or over receiving Pension Credit are eligible for a free TV Licence instead of the usual £169.50 fee. Applications for a free licence can be made online or by calling the designated number for assistance.
