Gillingham’s Manager Mark Bonner Emphasizes Aggressive Summer Recruitment Strategy

Mark Bonner, the manager of Gillingham, emphasizes their aggressive approach to summer recruitment but insists on not rushing into deals.

Bonner has the luxury of time to assemble a squad over the coming weeks and is pleased to find that some of his targets were already identified by the club’s recruitment department before his arrival.

Mark Bonner, Gillingham’s manager, has commended the pre-existing recruitment efforts before his tenure. He aims to revitalize the attacking force and has made strikers Ashley Nadesan and Oli Hawkins, along with attacking midfielder George Lapslie, available for transfer. Additionally, offloading left-sided defender Scott Malone could free up more funds for the team.

Bonner remarked, “There has been excellent groundwork already laid, with several players highlighted by Kenny (Jackett, the director of football) and the team. We share similar visions for what we can achieve, and we’re actively working towards it.”

“Recruitment is paramount, especially every summer, and there’s much work to be done. I’m enjoying collaborating with Kenny and Andy Hessenthaler (the head of recruitment), who bring invaluable experience and managerial insight,” Bonner added.

He stressed the importance of resources and hinted at substantial backing from the club’s owners to elevate Gillingham’s position in League 2.

“Resources matter, but it’s not just about spending money; it’s about prudent investment and long-term planning,” Bonner cautioned. “We aim to strengthen wisely and strategically in areas that will enhance our performance.”

Expressing his vision for the team, Bonner concluded, “I envision a forward-thinking, fast-paced, fearless team that excites fans and navigates the challenges of the season effectively. Our goal is to create a squad that everyone enjoys watching and being a part of.”
