Glasgow’s City Council leader took to social media to express gratitude to cleanup crews following the recent Celtic celebrations. Approximately 25,000 fans gathered in Trongate to commemorate the club’s Scottish Premiership victory, resulting in scenes of fans climbing traffic lights and structures, setting off flares, and leaving litter strewn across the streets.

Susan Aitken, in a post on social media, thanked the Glasgow City Council cleansing teams for their efforts in cleaning up after the celebrations. However, she also expressed disappointment at the behavior of some fans, stating that it is disheartening and unacceptable that a significant number of adults cannot celebrate their team’s success while also respecting fellow citizens and public property.

The council officials praised the exceptional cleanup work carried out overnight, ensuring that the area, including the route for the Cancer Research UK Race for Life, was cleared for the event. However, there was damage to infrastructure such as bus stops and traffic signals, with the full extent of repairs yet to be determined.

Despite the celebrations, the council emphasized that such behavior, including damage, disruption, and antisocial conduct, is unacceptable. They stressed the importance of being able to celebrate while also showing consideration for others in the city.

Superintendent John Menzies also commented on the situation, thanking partner agencies and the public for their support. He noted incidents of disorder, including the use of pyrotechnics and alcohol-related offenses, and emphasized that violence or assaults on the public or police officers are entirely unacceptable, with efforts ongoing to identify those responsible.
