Former Gillingham winger and academy coach Jermaine McGlashan, now the manager of AFC Croydon Athletic, has achieved quick success in his managerial role with the club’s promotion.
McGlashan, aged 36, assumed leadership of AFC Croydon Athletic in October, a club co-owned by rapper Stormzy and former Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha. When McGlashan took over, the team was positioned 17th in the Combined Counties Premier Division.
Under his guidance, the team secured the last playoff spot and went on to defeat the second and third-placed teams, Jersey Bulls and Knaphill, away from home, ultimately securing promotion.
Reflecting on this achievement, McGlashan expressed his excitement, stating, “Achieving promotion is an unbelievable feeling and the first thing I have ever won.” He highlighted the challenges of reaching this milestone, especially considering his previous near misses in playoffs during his playing career.
The club’s promotion garnered significant attention due to its high-profile owners, leading to increased expectations and pressure throughout the season. McGlashan acknowledged the pros and cons of this situation, emphasizing the club’s commitment to community involvement and local representation.
