In an exciting development for both sports enthusiasts and local residents, plans for a ground-breaking stadium and waterfront neighbourhood project in Northfleet, Kent, have been greenlit. Ebbsfleet United FC, a prominent football team, spearheaded the proposal, which gained approval from the Gravesham Borough Council’s planning committee on April 30, following the team’s initial proposal in October 2022.
CEO of Ebbsfleet United FC, Damian Irvine, expressed his enthusiasm for the project during the council meeting, emphasizing its potential to revitalize the area. “When this project was conceived, it was with genuine passion for a development that Gravesham Borough can be proud of,” stated Irvine. He stressed the project’s dual purpose: to bolster local infrastructure and services while also addressing the pressing need for housing in the region.
The ambitious venture encompasses the construction of an impressive 8,000-seater stadium, alongside the development of up to 3,500 homes, a 300-bed hotel, a retail village featuring shops and cafes, sports facilities, a nursery, medical services, and community venues. This substantial undertaking aims to transform Northfleet into a vibrant hub for recreation, commerce, and residential living.
Notably, the new stadium will nearly double the capacity of Ebbsfleet United’s current ground, Kuflink Stadium, providing enhanced facilities for both players and spectators. The project’s approval has garnered widespread support from council members, who recognize its potential to invigorate the local economy and create employment opportunities.
However, the development has not been without its challenges. Concerns were raised regarding the loss of Robin’s Wharf, a site crucial for mineral processing facilities. Despite objections from stakeholders, the council deemed the project viable, subject to conditions including addressing National Grid’s concerns and obtaining approval from the Secretary of State.
Looking ahead, developers anticipate a 10-year construction timeline, with the stadium’s construction slated to commence in September 2024 and conclude in August 2026. Reflecting on the approval, Damian Irvine expressed his gratitude, remarking, “To have a unanimous vote…for the benefit and legacy of the borough, it’s a special day.”
As plans move forward, the project promises to usher in a new era of growth and prosperity for Ebbsfleet United FC and the wider Northfleet community.
