Coastguard crews and the Royal Navy were at the scene on the coast near Birling Gap this evening.

At least nine emergency personnel were on the beach.

A coastguard vehicle and a Navy vehicle were also at the scene.

A spokeswoman for HM Coastguard told The Argus crews were stood down after what was thought to be ordnance was found to be part of a car engine.

The Ministry of Defence has been contacted for further comment.

It comes after explosives were found on a beach at the other end of the Sussex coast earlier this month.

A cordon was put up on Medmerry Beach near Chichester last week.

Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team attended Medmerry Beach near Selsey after reports of ordnance on the shoreline.

The team found multiple items and contacted the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (EOD).

A controlled explosion was then carried out on Thursday, April 18, when the tide was low enough.
