The sinkhole in Devonshire Place, Brighton, has been cordoned off for urgent repairs.
An assessment of the sinkhole is being carried out, with hopes that the repairs will be completed in the “next couple of weeks”.
The works have blocked some vehicles from being able to move from parking bays.
Councillor Trevor Muten, chairman of Brighton and Hove City Council’s transport and sustainability committee, said: “We have reacted quickly and effectively to the sinkhole that has appeared in Devonshire Place.
“Our contractor has made the site safe. An urgent assessment of the sinkhole is being carried out.
“We will then work towards a full repair alongside any utility companies that may have responsibilities regarding the sinkhole.
“At this stage, we cannot give a definite date for the repair work to be completed, but we hope it will be sorted in the next couple of weeks.
“We will do everything we can to help the owners of the vehicles within the safety barriers to reclaim their vehicles.
“The safety of residents is our top priority.”
