The crash took place at around 10.40pm on Friday, February 16 on the Watling Street coastbound carriageway between the A296 and Ebbsfleet Junctions.

Three cars were involved – a black Ford Fiesta, a blue Audi S3 and a blue MG HS.

The woman, who was a passenger in the Fiesta, was airlifted to a London hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

The driver and a second passenger were also treated for injuries and later discharged.

The driver of the blue Audi S3 along with his passenger had left the scene before the arrival of patrols and Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) started an investigation.

Matthew Sparkes, of no fixed address, was charged today (Wednesday, February 21) with the following offences:

  • Causing serious injury by driving dangerously
  • Failing to stop following a collision where others were injured
  • Failing to give a name and address or make a report at a police station following a collision where others were injured
  • Driving without insurance

On Tuesday, February 20, Sparkes was arrested and taken into custody.

The 35-year-old was remanded in custody to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court later the same day.

A woman, 25, from Walworth, who was also arrested in connection with the incident has been bailed to return to the police station, pending further enquiries.

Officers are continuing to urge anyone who witnessed the collision or has CCTV or dashcam footage to contact them if they have not yet spoken to the police.
