Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team were called to West Wittering beach at high tide after reports that a family were stuck.
They were supported by the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, and Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team.
At first, four firefighters were dispatched across the mudflat to try and rescue the stranded family.
However, it was decided to instead deploy two specialist mud technicians from the coastguard team.
They managed to rescue the family, who were then looked after by the ambulance service.

The family members were cold but unharmed.
Since the incident, which happened on Saturday, the coastguard team has urged beachgoers to remember safety tips when visiting areas known for mud flats or quicksand.
People have been reminded to check weather forecasts and tide times prior to leaving home, follow advice on warning signs and avoid mud.
A spokesman for Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said: “If you do get trapped, sit back to spread your weight evenly across the surface.
“Stop others from trying to help you, as they might get stuck too.
“If you get stuck, call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard.”
