Michael Crum tried to kill his wife at their home in Seven Sisters Road, Eastbourne, on November 17, 2022.
The 75-year-old was sentenced to a section 37 hospital order at Lewes Crown Court yesterday by Judge Christine Laing.
Judge Laing also put on a section 41 restriction under the Mental Health Act which means the Ministry of Justice must agree before Crum is discharged or granted leave from hospital.
He was sentenced for attempted murder.
