There are concerns about the 30mph limit in Denton which also passes by a primary school.

Sean Macleod, councillor for Newhaven North, said school children are being “put at risk” and called for the road to be brought down to a 20mph limit.

He also wanted a mirror installed by the Flying Fish pub so cars can see traffic around the nearby bend, as well as a speed warning sign near Denton Community Primary School.

Cllr Macleod said: “Residents are crying out for action with speeding in Denton Road and are calling on East Sussex County Council to deliver some sort of speed reduction system, we are not asking for all three steps just one of them would be very welcome.

“But something has to change we can’t continue like we are, there are school children being put at risk and residents are contacting me that their pets have tragically been killed by speeding cars.”

Corina Watts, councillor for Denton, said that it “feels like a matter of time before a child is hit by a speeding vehicle”.

The primary school is in Acacia Road which runs off Denton Road.

A spokeswoman for East Sussex County Council said: “We have noted the concerns raised about road safety on Denton Road, and will consider the petition when it is received.

“However, we have a finite amount of funding to develop local road safety and transport improvements across the county, and need to ensure that our resources are used on schemes that will have the greatest benefit to our local communities.

“Schemes that do not meet the county council’s benchmark for funding but are important to the local community can sometimes be funded through our Community Match initiative, which is open to parish and town councils, residents’ associations and local community groups.”

Lewes Liberal Democrats are currently running a petition calling for the speed limit to be reduced.
