The Horse Guards Inn located in the village of Tillington near Petworth was included in 78th spot on the list and was the only representative from the county there.

The website explains that votes are collected “from more than 100 industry professionals who are key people in the hospitality industry.”

It adds: “Our judges come from leading pub businesses, editors of media brands and food writers who are geographically spread across the UK to ensure no regional bias.”

What did Estrella Damm say about The Horse Guards Inn?

Discussing The Horse Guards Inn, Estrella Damm wrote: “The Horse Guards Inn got its name in the 1840’s, when part the household cavalry would frequent the venue, while their horses rested on grass in the grounds of the Petworth Estate.

“The relaxed, friendly and informal pub is designed with wooden tables and chairs, oak beams and stripped floorboards.”

It also earned praise for its seasonal menu made up of food from local suppliers, items grown from its own vegetable patch and whatever can be “foraged from the wild hedgerows or seashores nearby”.

The guide added: “There are three en-suite country bedrooms on site that offer lovely views of the village and the South Downs.

“This is top quality pub food that is no stranger to winning awards. In fact it was crowned Pub of the Year 2017 by The Good Pub Guide.”

Outside of the top 100 gastropubs list, The Horse Guards Inn has also been well-received by diners, with it earning a 4.5/5 score on Tripadvisor from 390 reviews.

One reviewer wrote: “Amazing food, great service. Celebrated my birthday here and enjoyed the whole experience.

“We all had roast dinners and couldn’t fault the food. Didn’t have room for dessert, maybe next time. I can’t wait to go back. Thank you for making my birthday lunch memorable.”
