The man, aged in his 40s, suffered the wounds during an incident at around 8am on Sunday in Farm Road, Hove.
A woman in her 30s was found critically injured nearby after reportedly falling from a window.
Stewart Kamande, 39, of Farm Road was charged with grievous bodily harm and grievous bodily harm with intent.

Sussex Police Detective Sergeant Victoria Thornton-Green said: “Following a combined effort from numerous teams across the division, we have now charged and remanded a man in relation to the offences.
“Thank you to those who have assisted our enquiries so far, and we urge any outstanding witnesses or anyone with information to come forward and make a report.”
Kamande appeared in court on Tuesday and has been remanded in custody. He is next due to appear in court on February 14.
