Ryan Greer made two calls after being slashed by William Miller on July 14 last year, a court heard.
Mr Greer, 35, was found lying at the bottom of Whitehawk Close, Brighton, and was treated by nearby residents who heard “screams and moans” outside.
Miller, 43, denies grievous bodily harm with intent and said he acted in self-defence.
CCTV footage from next door to Miller’s flat in Whitehawk Close picked up the audio of Miller telling Mr Greer to get off his property.
Lewes Crown Court sitting at Chichester heard yesterday that the pair, who knew each other, got in an argument over a charging cable.
In the CCTV footage, Miller can be heard yelling “get out of my property right now” and “you’re going to think I’m f****** African by the time I’m done with you” which Jonathan Atkinson, prosecuting, said was a reference to his machete.
Emily Farley, serious and complex crime investigator for Brighton CID, told the court Sussex Police became aware of the incident after Mr Greer’s 999 calls which were at 12.23pm and 12.32pm.
Body cam footage from police officers showed a blood trail leading up from the bottom of Whitehawk Close to Miller’s flat. The trail went around the side of the property and there was a large amount of blood outside the back porch.
More footage played to the court from inside the flat showed a blood stain on the sofa.
Mr Greer was left with a “big gash” to his head and multiple cuts to his back.
Neighbours who gave him first aid initially thought he had been hit by a car. They described how his T-shirt was “drenched” in blood and he had a “flap of skin loose behind his ear”.
Syam Soni, defending, said Mr Greer attacked Miller first and Miller was “acting to protect his own life”.
Miller handed himself in three days later on July 17 and gave police a bag of clothing which he said he was wearing at the time, as well as a machete.
Photos taken at the police station showed Miller had “scratch marks” to his hand and behind his ear.
The trial continues.
