The development at St Giles Close in Shoreham is the first of Adur District Council’s small sites programme projects to be completed.

The programme involves the use of the council’s brownfield land in Sompting, Lancing, Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate to create much-needed extra homes.

At St Giles, more than a dozen old garages were demolished to make way for the two two-bedroom houses and two one-bedroom bungalows.

Each of the homes is equipped with an air source heat pump to make the properties more sustainable by providing residents with renewable energy. They also come with individual gardens, garden sheds and designated parking spaces.

Their first occupants are due to move in this week.

Councillor Carson Albury, the council’s cabinet member for Adur Homes and customer services, said: “The new homes in St Giles Close look amazing and I’m really hopeful the residents moving in will be very happy indeed.

“By turning little-used council land into new homes, we can help local families to have a roof over their heads for a rent they can afford, while at the same time reducing the pressure on our budgets.”

Cllr Albury was given a tour of the new homes by Steve King, the construction director at Cheesmur, the contractor on the St Giles Close project.

“The brownfield site had reached the end of its useful life,” said Mr King.

“This development means the council can breathe new life into the community without the loss of any greenfield space.

“We’re delighted to be able to play our small part in this great work.”

Work as part of the scheme is also currently underway on sites at Leconfield Road in Lancing, Sylvan Road in Sompting, Wilmot Road in Shoreham and Gardner Road in Fishersgate.

In Lancing, construction of new homes will also begin at the Daniel Close and Gravelly Crescent garage sites and the South Street car park this year.
