More than 4,000 items were confiscated from Lewes Crown Court, Hove Crown Court and Brighton Magistrates’ Court from January to September 2023.
A wide range of items were taken by security staff with a government spokesman saying safety is the Ministry of Justice’s “first priority”.
A Freedom of Information Request revealed that 13 knives over three inches long, 50 different items containing drugs and 120 large umbrellas were confiscated across the three sites.
Glass bottles were the most confiscated items in Lewes and Brighton with more than1,500 items taken over the course of the year.

In response to the request a government spokesman said: “The safety and security of all court users and staff is the MOJ’s first priority, which is why the department has robust safety measures in place across all courts.
“Security procedures are kept under constant review and any necessary action will always be taken where appropriate.”
