The Co-op in Peacehaven’s Meridian Shopping Centre is set to close in the new year amid redevelopment plans – which will see the site demolished.

A sign placed on the door of the supermarket tells customers there are just three weeks left until its doors will be closed for good.

Plans for a new shopping area were approved by Lewes District Council’s planning committee on Wednesday, April 19, and included a Morrisons superstore as well as other retail sites, a library and a town square.

Morrisons first revealed its plans in 2021 and works are expected to begin in early 2024.

The supermarket’s last day will be Saturday, January 20.

It is not yet known if staff at the Co-op will lose their jobs, however the development promises a total of 390 new jobs in the town.

The Co-op has been approached for comment.
