Local councillors including Ruairi Kelly are calling for a more affordable grocery store to move into the area.

Shopping choices in the greater Easterhouse area include Glasgow Fort, the Lochs shopping centre and Morrisons – but the issue of a lack of food supermarket choices has been raised.

SNP North East Councillor Kelly said: “Access to affordable food shopping is something that is missing at the minute and I have highlighted it as a priority for any future developments.

“I hope that the planned housing and infrastructure work will help entice one of these supermarkets to the area and I will be doing everything I can to encourage them to locate here.”

The draft Greater Easterhouse strategic development framework (SDF)  – a 123 page document – has laid out more than 20 actions to help improve and regenerate Greater Easterhouse .

The draft said: “We will explore the potential for an additional grocery retailer to provide affordable food choice in the area.”

Other issues raised in the report include the need for investment in the Lochs Shopping Centre and how the Metro should reach the area.

There are hopes to build more housing on brownfield land to boost the population and create more cycling and walking routes..

Talking on the matter, the council said: “The SDF for Greater Easterhouse identifies key issues and opportunities in the area, and sets the vision and framework for future development in line with the spatial policies of the City Development Plan and the National Planning Framework 4.”

People are being invited to to have their say on the strategy as part of a consultation currently.
