Robin Leake-Date and Eleanor Bond both received awards at this year’s St John Ambulance Cadet of the Year ceremony.

The pair were honoured for their work in the cadet force for young first aiders.

Robin, 16, from Portslade, won Sussex’s Cadet of the Year and will go on to represent the county in the national version of competition.

Eleanor, nine, also from Portslade, won Badger of the Year for her efforts in the badgers children’s group.

Darren Owen, district manager for St John Ambulance in Sussex, said: “I am so proud of our young people.

“Today we really put them through their paces. It was a very high scoring group and it was close at the top.

“These are inspiring young people, well done to them all. Congratulations to Robin, our outstanding cadet and Ellie our outstanding badger.”

St John Ambulance’s cadet programme allows young people aged between ten and 17 to learn first aid skills and work towards becoming qualified first aiders.

Cadets can also qualify to become volunteers with St John Ambulance and work as first aiders at events in Sussex and across the country.
