University Hospitals Sussex said it urgently needed more hats for new arrivals expected over the Christmas period.

The trust said Worthing Hospital, which it runs, wants knitted hats for both premature and full-term babies over the coming weeks.

The hats should not have under chin ties.

Babies are prone to losing body heat very quickly due to having disproportionately large heads. Hats are frequently used to keep them snug.

A University Hospitals Sussex spokeswoman said that all its units received knitted hats donated by organisations and residents throughout the year.

The trust estimates that more than 10,000 hats are used each year across its hospitals.

Anyone wishing to donate is advised to drop them off at the Worthing Hospital Delivery Suite reception.
