Landgate Bistro in Rye, The Sundial in Herstmonceux and The Fig Tree Restaurant at Hurstpierpoint were the county’s representatives on the list.

Discussing the list OpenTable said: “Introducing the OpenTable Top 100 restaurants in the UK for 2023. Compiled from over 1.2 million OpenTable diner reviews and using dining metrics including diner ratings, percentage of reservations made in advance, and five-star reviews, the list highlights some of the top spots favoured by diners this year.”

Sussex restaurants recognised by OpenTable’s UK Top 100

Landgate Bistro in Rye prides itself on making “British food with a classic or modern slant” and sourcing ingredients from “local fields, woodlands and waters”.

Its website adds: “We serve a selection of local marsh lamb and pork, and fresh fish is landed a few hundred meters from us (the gurnard, which tail is on our sign, was caught in Rye Bay).”

Examples of dishes you can try there include warm lobster Risoni with brandy sauce or breast and confit leg of Gressingham Duck, served with spiced parsnip, runner beans, and confit potato.

The Sundial in Herstmonceux describes itself as “a small family-run restaurant, with a reputation for fantastic food”.

Its website says: “The Sundial’s menus range from the superb to the sublime and whether you are lunching with a friend, entertaining a client or dining out in style, you will find a menu to suit the occasion.”

Examples of dishes you can try there include Roast Grouse with Perigourdine Sauce, Braised Red Cabbage, Fondant Potato or Beef Carpaccio Perfumed with White Truffle and Parmesan Regiano Shavings.

Finally, The Fig Tree Restaurant at Hurstpierpoint describes itself as an “elegant dining venue offering fresh and seasonal dishes.”

Its website adds: “Tempt your tastebuds and indulge with our ever-changing set and tasting menus. Offering seasonal dishes made with the finest local produce, it’s time to tempt your tastebuds.”

Examples of dishes include venison with celeriac, truffle, onion and wild garlic or turbot with gnocchi, wild mushroom, butternut squash and broccoli.

What do OpenTable diners think of Sussex restaurants?

All three Sussex restaurants included on the list were highly acclaimed by OpenTable diners, with one person sharing for Landgate Bistro: “The whole experience at the Landgate was brilliant. My wife and I have visited several times over the last few years and the focaccia remains a highlight!”

Meanwhile, for The Sundial one commented: “Superb on every level, as it always is. Fine dining yet relaxed – ticks all the boxes.”

One reviewer of the Fig Tree Restaurant wrote: “We went on Friday and had a lovely dinner, as usual, we took friends and they really enjoyed it. Definitely go there again very soon either for lunch or dinner. One of our favourites.”
