Fusion startup Xcimer Energy on Wednesday flipped the switch on its Phoenix laser system, which the company says is the largest privately owned example in the world. Xcimer’s approach to fusion power is modeled after the National Ignition Facility (NIF), which proved in December 2022 that a controlled fusion reaction could release more power than required to ignite it. The NIF trained 192 laser beams on a fuel target smaller than a pencil eraser. The energy from the lasers hit the gold target. As the lasers obliterate the gold target, their energy is converted into X-rays, which are focused on…

Password manager maker Dashlane says hackers have obtained at least a dozen encrypted vaults used for storing customer passwords during a weekend cyberattack. The company said on its website that hackers brute-forced the company’s two-factor authentication system, granting the hackers access to about 20 customer accounts. By defeating its two-factor mechanism, the hackers were able to download a copy of certain customers’ encrypted vaults, which store their passwords and other sensitive credentials. Dashlane said on its incident page that there was no evidence of compromise of its own systems, but it has not yet said how the hackers were able…

Mythos was kept within Project Glasswing, a restricted defensive programme. Access was granted to a limited group of organisations including Amazon, Microsoft and Apple for cybersecurity work. Anthropic believed defenders should receive advanced capabilities before attackers gained access to similar systems at scale. That policy made Mythos one of the most talked about AI…

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), a global body dedicated to vaccine development, on Monday (1 June) pledged US$62 million…

Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are calling on the Trump administration’s Labor Department to scrap a rule that would open America’s retirement savings accounts to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies — a move the lawmakers say puts workers’ financial futures at risk while lining the pockets of President Trump and his family. In a 14-page letter sent Monday to Acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling, Sanders (I-VT) and Warren (D-MA) joined House Education and Workforce Committee ranking member Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) to condemn a proposed Department of Labor rule floated in March. The rule would give 401(k) plan fiduciaries cover…
