A data breach at a Texas state government department allowed hackers to take the driver’s license information and passport numbers of more than 3 million people, according to the state’s attorney general. The incident is one of the largest data breaches to affect the state this year. In a data breach notice on the Texas Parks & Wildlife website, the department said the state’s cybersecurity unit recently detected a security incident — the nature of which, or when, was not specified — that allowed hackers to access the department’s license system vendor, which handles the sale of hunting and fishing…

The layer-1 blockchain Algorand has released its plan to tackle the potential threat of quantum computing, with a roadmap to update the network’s infrastructure by the end of 2027.Algorand Foundation technology chief Bruno Martins said Thursday that the updates will aim to give the network broad quantum resilience, a threat it has been researching and preparing for several years.“Governments, standards bodies, and security experts around the world are already preparing for a future where quantum computers may break many of the cryptographic systems that protect today’s digital infrastructure,” Martins said. Algorand is the latest crypto project to plan for quantum computing…
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) told grid operators on Thursday to fast-track interconnection requests from data centers and other large electricity users. Under the orders, six major grid operators have to show that data centers are “able to connect to the transmission system in a timely and orderly manner.” Data centers will be responsible for paying the costs of the interconnection. Commissioners approved the orders unanimously. FERC also provided an opening to grid tech startups, directing grid operators to consider “alternative transmission technologies.” The commission didn’t name specific technologies, but the directive could include things like solid-state transformers or…
Every year, local food and drink organisation BITE Sussex joins with the Brighton and Hove Tourism Alliance – the independent business voice of the visitor economy in the city – to bring together key businesses for an informal afternoon sampling local produce and sharing knowledge through chef demos, ‘meet the maker’ exhibitor stands and industry masterclasses. This year, the event was hosted at Brighton Beach House on Madeira Drive with welcome drinks sponsored by Brighton Gin and Fever-Tree, and chef demos from Simon Mckenzie, Sabu Joseph from Easy Tiger, Ashley Barton from The Copper Clam and Ewan Waller from Maré…
These days, our lives are overrun by AI. It’s absolutely everywhere – from our personal lives, coming up with good recipes, helping us understand concepts and creating workout routines; to our professional lives, writing emails, drafting contracts and working out the best ways to get to work. But more than that, as a result, it feels as if suddenly everybody is working with or in AI in one way or another. Whether that’s introducing a new AI feature to an online platform or bringing it into a work flow in the office, we are simply drowning in AI “solutions”. So…
Doomscrolling on social media is a very common problem and can feel like an endless loop of constantly losing track of time. Instead of tackling this issue with strict limits, a new mindful screen time app called Mivo Scrolling is trying to shake things up. Launched last month, Mivo doesn’t look much different from other screen time apps. It tracks screen time and usage patterns, and provides insights into daily habits. However, Mivo believes what sets its app apart is its no-shaming approach. The idea that users should be more intentional about their time online has also been fueling the…
If Amazon Web Services has its way, the cloud giant is going to push even deeper into Nvidia’s market, in what might be one of the biggest challenges to Nvidia’s AI chip dominance we’ve seen so far. Amazon’s AI chief Peter DeSantis told Bloomberg that AWS is in talks to sell its AI chip Trainium to other companies for use in data centers. DeSantis declined to specify which companies could be the buyers of these chips. Such talk about selling chips is in the early stages, the company tells TechCrunch. They stem from Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s annual shareholder letter…
Proteins carry out almost every important function in our body, from copying our DNA to turning the food we eat into energy. These tiny “molecular machines” are first made by our cells as straight chains, like long pieces of string. Then, to work properly, each protein must fold into an intricate 3D shape. Source link
