Nearly two years ago Close Brothers chief executive said the bank would take “decisive actions” to strengthen its financial standing. The bold overhaul of the lender’s capital structure came amid the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) review into the motor finance industry – a sector which made up 20 per cent of its £9.5bn loan book…
The event saw young players take to the pitch in front of parents, grandparents and extended family, with the stands filled with encouragement throughout the afternoon. Cheers rang out for goals, tackles and passes alike as the children, wearing matching kits and club badges, played with visible pride and enthusiasm. Colin McGowan, chief executive of Hamilton Community Stadium, said the atmosphere reflected the power of local communities working together. “There is something special that happens when a community comes together,” he said, describing the afternoon as “truly amazing” as families supported the young players from the sidelines. Following the matches,…

The seafront flat, located on Marine Parade in Brighton, is on the market for £130,000. Measuring just 161square foot (15 square metres) in total, the flat is below the nationally described minimum space standard of 37 square metres (approx. 398 square feet) for a new-build one-person studio flat. The minimum size requirements for new construction studio flats (one person, one bedroom) is 37 square metres if it has a shower room, or 39 square metres with a bathroom. Dwellings below these standards are often referred to as “micro-dwellings” or “pocket homes” and are generally found in older converted buildings. The flat consists of one room…

A US court has dismissed the shareholder lawsuit brought against cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike following the mass global outage that disrupted systems towards the end of 2024 and erased significant market value last year, according to court documents. The case accused CrowdStrike of misleading investors about the strength of its technology and internal processes. However, the judge ultimately ruled that the claims didn’t meet the legal threshold required to proceed. Thus, the case has officially been dismissed and Crowdstrike is, for all intents and purposes, off the hook. CrowdStrike welcomed the decision, with Cathleen Anderson, the company’s Chief Legal Officer, stating,…
If you’ve been following the billionaire exodus from California with some confusion, here’s what’s actually driving the nervousness: it’s not the 5% rate. As highlighted Friday in the New York Post, the proposed wealth tax would hit founders on their voting shares rather than the actual equity they own. Take Larry Page, who about 3% of Google but controls roughly 30% of its voting power through dual-class stock. Under this proposal, he’d owe taxes on that 30%. For a company valued in the hundreds of billions, that’s a lot more than a rounding error. The Post reports that one SpaceX…
Engineers have taken a major step toward producing the smallest earthquakes ever created, shrinking seismic-style vibrations down to the scale of a microchip. The breakthrough centers on a device called a surface acoustic wave phonon laser. The technology could eventually enable more advanced chips for smartphones and other wireless electronics, helping make them smaller, faster, and more energy efficient. The research was led by Matt Eichenfield, an incoming faculty member at the University of Colorado Boulder, along with scientists from the University of Arizona and Sandia National Laboratories. Their findings were published Jan. 14 in the journal Nature. What Are…
In October, at a tech conference in Italy, Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos predicted that millions of people will be living in space “in the next couple of decades” and “mostly,” he’d said, “because they want to,” because robots will be more cost-effective than humans for doing the actual work in space. No doubt that’s why my ears perked up when, at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco weeks later, I found an on-stage prediction by Will Bruey, the founder of space manufacturing startup Varda Space Industries, so striking. Rather than robots doing the work as Bezos envisioned, Bruey…
