Microsoft and Chevron announced plans on Monday to develop a 2.67-gigawatt natural gas power plant in West Texas to serve the tech company’s AI and cloud data centers. Under the 20-year power purchase agreement, the plant will provide dedicated electricity to a Microsoft-operated data center. Two large GE Vernova turbines will generate most of the power, with a Caterpillar subsidiary Solar Turbines providing the rest. (The Solar Turbines name might sound familiar — xAI uses them in its unpermitted power plant near Memphis.) Microsoft will buy power from the power plant for 20 years. The project will be “among the…

On Friday, Claude Code creator Boris Cherny made an appearance at Meta’s @Scale conference and, surprisingly, the first question from the audience was about loops. “Are loops the next hype cycle,” the questioner asked, “or are they for real?” Cherny’s answer was an emphatic “yes, they’re for real,” he said. “Two years ago, we wrote source code by hand. We started to transition so agents write the code. And now we’re transitioning to the point where agents are prompting agents that then write the code,” he continued. “As big as the step from source code to agents was, loops are…

The changes were agreed by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) board today (Monday) following a national review. They will also see a second wholetime pumping appliance — a fire engine — reinstated at Cowcaddens, after it was temporarily withdrawn in September 2023. The number of wholetime appliances at Govan and Springburn would be reduced from two to one. The second appliance in Govan had been temporarily withdrawn in September 2023. A second wholetime appliance, removed in 2023, would be reinstated at Maryhill. There is planning permission in principle for a new station at Maitland Street. READ NEXT: Glasgow…

Trees planted along farmland to shield crops from strong winds are often viewed as a simple way to support biodiversity. But new research suggests the picture is more complicated, especially in agricultural wetlands where many bird species depend on open landscapes. A team of researchers studying farmland wetlands on the western coast of central Japan found that shelterbelts, rows of trees planted as windbreaks, do not benefit all birds equally. While they provide habitat for some species, they can also reduce the abundance and diversity of birds that rely on open grassland and wetland environments. The findings were published in…
Tata Electronics, an Indian electronics and semiconductor manufacturer and a key supplier to Apple and Tesla, among other tech giants, confirmed a data breach weeks after files purportedly obtained from the company appeared on a hacker forum. The confirmation comes as the hacker forum listing claims to offer more than 630GB of data allegedly stolen from Tata Electronics, comprising over 204,300 files. A review of a sample of the files by TechCrunch found what appear to be Apple supplier specifications and Tesla manufacturing documents. The authenticity, provenance, and completeness of the data could not be independently verified. Founded in 2020,…
People worried about catastrophic effects of AI—broadly labeled “doomers”—have said for years that the technology poses a threat to humanity and published proposals for how the government should intervene in its development. The doomers just got their government intervention—not over a bioweapon or rogue AI, but in response to an AI model that’s basically just really good at coding. And the result so far looks less like a safety plan than like a superficial reaction. There’s plenty to dissect about what happened in those few days that led to such drastic action from the government, and it’s notable that Amazon…
