Dead dark stinging sponge (Sarcotragus foetidus). Credit: Fikret Öndes Vibrio bacteria, named for their vibrating swimming motion, span approximately 150 known species. Most Vibrio live in brackish or salt water, either swimming free or living as pathogens or symbionts in fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and corals. Because Vibrio thrives at relatively high temperatures, outbreaks in marine animals are expected to become ever more frequent under global warming. For example, over the past few decades, Vibrio have been implicated in the ‘bleaching’ of subtropical and tropical corals around the world. Now, researchers from Spain and Turkey have shown that Vibrio bacteria also…
The historic building, in Windmill Drive in Patcham, Brighton, was built in 1885 and is believed to be the last brick-built windmill in Sussex – perhaps even in England. The landmark was turned into a home in 1964, but all of the original machinery still remains. Two of the staircases are believed to have originated from St Paul’s Cathedral. Estate agents Hamptons describe the Grade II listed building as “pristine” with “panoramic views over the South Downs”. The mill, formerly known as Waterhall Mill, was used as a lookout post for the home guard during the Second World War. In…

Leading defense tech startup Anduril has developed a new product designed to take-on the proliferation of low-cost, high-powered aerial threats. The product is called Roadrunner, a modular, twin-jet powered autonomous vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) air vehicle that’s designed for low costs. Anduril has also developed a variant called Roadrunner-Munition, or Roadrunner-M, a “high-explosive interceptor,” meaning it can carry a warhead and also defensively destroy aerial threats. Roadrunner is unusual both in appearance and capability: it can take-off, following, and destroying targets; if there is no need to intercept the target, the vehicle can autonomously maneuver back to base for…

Long before researchers discovered the electron and its role in generating electrical current, they knew about electricity and were exploring its potential. One thing they learned early on was that metals were great conductors of both electricity and heat. And in 1853, two scientists showed that those two admirable properties of metals were somehow related: At any given temperature, the ratio of electronic conductivity to thermal conductivity was roughly the same in any metal they tested. This so-called Wiedemann-Franz law has held ever since — except in quantum materials, where electrons stop behaving as individual particles and glom together into…
