Credit: Unsplash/CC0 Public Domain Children must be taught more about the importance of plants if education about climate change and sustainability is to be effective, experts have warned. Botany should feature more heavily in the school curriculum, and be a greater focus of educational policy, the study in the Journal of Biological Education says. It warns neither the importance of plants for sustainability nor the threats facing many of them are adequately represented in science education. While the problem has been identified for some time, attempts to address it have often struggled to gain a foothold in science education practice.…
In new figures announced on Friday, Brighton and Hove City Council leader Bella Sankey said the chancellor’s autumn statement last week has left the council with a gap of £31 million for next year’s budget. Previous forecasts predicted a funding gap of around £25.3 million for the financial year 2024/25. But the city council said the autumn statement and local government settlement for next year “falls disastrously short of meeting the huge inflationary costs and increasing demand”. It said that in the last 13 years, the government has slashed the council’s budget by £120 million in real terms. The “very large…

The film’s star looked extra dapper on the red carpet at the Paris premiere in a sequined blouse from Tom Ford’s spring/summer 2024 women’s collection, as reported by Page Six. The 27-year-old’s top featured a sleeveless design and glistened as he moved. Timmy paired the metallic silver top with black trousers and black patent leather boots. While at the premiere, the Dune actor posed alongside his other Wonka co-stars including Hugh Grant, 63. The Notting Hill star sported a cozy look in a black corduroy suit and white button-up shirt.…
Welcome to Startups Weekly. Sign up here to get it in your inbox every Friday. Hello, you scrumptious specimen of a human being. Have you looked yourself in the mirror and given yourself a high five today? No? Well, here’s your chance! I’ve had a productive couple of weeks on the site. I got pissy about founders failing to consider sustainability in startup pitch decks. I looked at a few thousand decks and realized that fewer than 1% mention environmental concerns, a fact I find deeply concerning. I argue that startup founders, unlike individuals in large corporations, are uniquely positioned…
Carol Daniels, Operations Director at NEN, said: “We need a manifesto for change in enterprise support in this country. The impact of the UK Shared Prosperity Funding and the changes to business support as a result of policies around Local Enterprise Partnerships and devolution has combined with rising costs, in particular wages, to create a massive mountain of challenges for those small businesses we are so passionate about. “Businesses are desperate for support so they can deliver the growth our country needs, so we need policies now around how we sustain and support economic growth, how SMEs can access finance…
The legal duel between the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Kraken, a leading cryptocurrency exchange, looks like another misguided attempt by the SEC to exert control over an industry that fundamentally challenges an outdated regulatory playbook. The agency’s lawsuit, filed in November, accuses Kraken of operating as an unregistered securities exchange. The lawsuit isn’t just a repeat of the SEC’s past failures. It’s also a glaring example of regulatory overreach that fails to grasp the essence of cryptocurrency. It mirrors the agency’s actions against Coinbase, which mark a pattern of aggressive regulation that is both ineffectual and counterproductive.…
In early November of this year, aurora borealis were observed at surprisingly low latitudes, as far south as Italy and Texas. Such phenomena indicate the impacts of a solar coronal mass ejection on the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. Far more dramatic than this recent light show was, it was nothing compared to a huge solar storm in February 1872. The resulting auroral display from that event ringed the globe and produced auroras observed in sites as close to the equator as Bombay and Khartoum. An international team consisting of scientists from nine counties has now published a detailed study…
