You might think the big story out of Match Group’s first-quarter earnings is Tinder’s turnaround. The dating app’s revenue is slightly up again after quarter-after-quarter of declines. But we’d like to point to a comment the chief financial officer made about how the company is slowing its hiring right now because it needs more money to pay for AI tools for its employees. Ah, yes, the good ol’ “let’s blame AI” strategy! While speaking to analysts on the first-quarter earnings call, Match Group CFO Steven Bailey talked about how the dating app giant was investing in AI technology for internal…
Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is a lush enclave on the southeastern point of the country, filled with Mayan ruins, cenotes, and fascinating towns to explore. My recent trip to the Mayan region took in two towns that make a compelling combination. Tulum Tulum exudes intrigue—bohemian chic meets Mayan history in a stunningly beautiful area. Tulum has two main zones: a lively town and the dreamy seaside, where slick hotels line the sandy beaches. We chose Nômade Temple in Tulum for our weeklong eco-luxury escape. Hidden in jungle foliage, various accommodation options greet guests, all unified by a design of dark wood, iron, and…

A new report from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has found that more than one-third of SMEs are prepared to reduce or stop trading with the EU altogether, due to the differing regulatory environments, mounting red tape and compliance costs. This finding lays bare the cumulative toll that post-Brexit trading conditions have taken on Britain’s smallest firms. Unlike larger corporations, they can’t absorb compliance costs by spreading them across high trade volumes or by employing dedicated in-house specialists, and often lack the margins and the administrative capacity to navigate this regulatory maze. This unfortunate state of play is leading many small…

Scientists have discovered the cause of a persistent glitch that continues to disrupt superconducting quantum computers, even when they have built-in defenses. For all their advanced hardware, superconducting quantum computers are vulnerable to errors caused by ionizing radiation from space or the environment. Radiation particles interfere with the chip substrate (the silicon base the processor is built on), which leads to the creation of rogue particles (quasiparticles) that disrupt the qubits, the basic units of quantum computers.
