The CEO of investment management firm VanEck says he can’t see a world where Bitcoin (BTC) is overtaken as the leading store of value on the internet.“I think it’s impossible for me to imagine some other internet store of value [will] leapfrog Bitcoin,” Jan van Eck said in a Dec. 16 interview with CNBC. “There’s 50 million users of Bitcoin, so it’s got network effects.”The CEO — $76.4 billion in assets under management — also crushed accusations that Bitcoin is in a “bubble,” — explaining that no asset has ever been in a bubble that continues to outperform itself every…
Macaca-fascicularis. Credit: UF/IFAS In a first-of-its-kind study for North America, scientists accumulated a list of potential invasive species for Florida, and researchers deemed 40 pose the greatest threat. A team of experts, led by University of Florida scientists, evaluated terrestrial, aquatic and marine species with characteristics that make them particularly adept at invasion. Their list includes 460 vertebrates, invertebrates, algae and plants. “Invasive species management tends to be reactive, instead of preventative,” said Deah Lieurance, who led the project as the then-coordinator of the UF/IFAS Assessment of Non-Native Plants and is now an assistant professor of invasive species biology and…
Breandan O’Connor, from Haywards Heath, had a triple heart bypass in July this year. The 63-year-old first noticed a problem after experiencing unusual pain in his chest while walking up a hill. “At the time, I wasn’t worried,” he said. “I thought I was just unfit. I’d got out of the habit of going to the gym during the lockdowns. But with my years of nursing, I knew that pain could be the sign of something else, so I thought I better get it checked out.” After visiting his GP and being referred for tests, doctors discovered that three of the…

While still far off from its peak of $1.5 billion in June 2022, according to data from real-world asset loan tracker RWA.xyz, the resurgence could signal that loan-seekers are looking for blockchain-based alternatives to traditional financiers amid a recent rise in interest rates. The current average percentage rate is 9.64% for blockchain-based credit protocols, while financiers have been offering small business bank loan interest rates between 5.75% and 11.91%, according to a…
Certain facial features — like downturned lips and a heavy brow — are known to make someone appear untrustworthy to others, even though these do not indicate a person’s actual character. Such facial biases influence our everyday social interactions as well as high-stakes decisions, including who we hire, or elect to political office. But a new study by Columbia researchers shows that the effects of these judgments can be mitigated. The study outlines the results of four experiments that the authors conducted with 1,400 volunteers. Through those experiments, the researchers found that when real-world defendants have facial features that appear…
With last year’s winner Ladbaby out of the running, a group of unexpected music artists from Heather View in Crowborough want to claim the top spot in the charts with their offering “Christmas Celebration”. While the rest of the country was getting a head start on their Christmas shopping, residents and…
