From the impacts on the environment and climate to transforming land cover and habitats, urban growth is driving global change. Urban areas contribute up to 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions. By 2050, urban areas globally will either double or triple, and the raw materials needed to build future cities is more than the world can sustainably provide. Yet, the impacts of cities on Earth systems are not factored into policy and planning among international agencies and that needs to change, says Karen Seto, Frederick C. Hixon Professor of Geography and Urbanization Science at the Yale School of the Environment.…

This NASA photo obtained January 25, 2024 shows the Ingenuity Mars helicopter’s rotor blade damaged during flight landing. NASA’s Ingenuity Mars helicopter, which made history by achieving the first powered flight on another world, has officially ended its nearly three-year mission after sustaining rotor damage during its last outing, the space agency said Thursday. The tissue-box sized aircraft, which hitched a ride to the Red Planet under the belly of the Perseverance rover, first lifted off the surface on April 19, 2021. Our understanding of the world relies greatly on our knowledge of its constituent materials and their interactions. Recent advances in materials science technologies have ratcheted up our ability to identify chemical substances and expanded possible applications. One such technology is infrared spectroscopy, used for molecular identification in various fields, such as in medicine, environmental monitoring, and industrial production. However, even the best existing tool — the Fourier transform infrared spectrometer or FTIR — utilizes a heating element as its light source. Resulting detector noise in the infrared region limits the devices’ sensitivity, while physical properties hinder miniaturization. Now, a research…

One in five 16 to 25-year-olds have missed school or work in the last year because of their mental health, new research has found. The Prince’s Trust NatWest Youth Index 2024 also found similar numbers did not apply for jobs because of a mental health issue, and that it worsened in the last year. The annual research report highlights how young people’s happiness with work, education, qualifications and money is at its lowest since polling began in 2009. Figures from an online YouGov survey of 2239 adults between November 23 and December 14 2023 were weighted to represent all UK…
