Cover of the 1947 Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists issue, featuring the Doomsday Clock at seven minutes to midnight. Credit: Public domain/Wikimedia Once every year, a select group of nuclear, climate and technology experts assemble to determine where to place the hands of the Doomsday Clock. Presented by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the Doomsday Clock is a visual metaphor for humanity’s proximity to catastrophe. It measures our collective peril in minutes and seconds to midnight, and we don’t want to strike 12. In 2023, the expert group brought the clock the closest it has ever been to midnight:…
Me: Would you like to introduce yourself? Gifford: My name’s Andrew Gifford, I’m an artist mostly known for my landscape painting, born in 1970, went to Newcastle Art College in 1994. M: When did you start considering painting as a career? G: It’s a funny question. I painted ever since I was three, and they were just little drawings. I got to about fifteen and I’d sell my little bird paintings to my parents’ friends. I did work experience as a vet, weirdly, at this aviary. I didn’t know if it was the birds I was interested in, or drawing…

In this ‘new normal’, the realisation has dawned that rocketing user growth as a metric represented somewhat of an illusion. Some investors perhaps deprioritised fundamentals like business sustainability and long-term pathways to profitability. Not any longer. According to CB Insights 74% of early-stage VC deals in Q3 2023 went to companies with a focus on unit economics and profitability, compared to 48% in Q3 2022. In this more challenging economic climate, pathways to funding are certainly not as straightforward. While VCs are demanding higher standards and more tangible metrics, bank loans are subject to more onerous lending conditions. Against this…
Around one million individuals worldwide become infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, each year. To replicate and spread the infection, the virus must smuggle its genetic material into the cell nucleus and integrate it into a chromosome. Research teams led by Dirk Görlich at the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Science and Thomas Schwartz at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have now discovered that its capsid has evolved into a molecular transporter. As such, it can directly breach a crucial barrier, which normally protects the cell nucleus against viral invaders. This way of smuggling keeps the viral…
