With up to 20,000 visitors passing through on peak days, the balance between motorists and pedestrians has become a growing concern.
In response, Dartford Council is proposing new measures to strengthen pedestrianisation and reduce unauthorised vehicle access in the area.
Residents are invited to have their say on the proposals by visiting here.
The proposed changes include introducing new Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) and working with Kent County Council to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to manage motor traffic on High Street and Lowfield Street.
Bollards would also be placed at key entrances, allowing controlled access for authorised vehicles while ensuring the area can be fully secured when needed.
The council also plans to create new ‘streateries’ – outdoor seating areas for businesses – and expand its programme of events and cultural activities to enhance the High Street experience for visitors.
To improve traffic flow, the proposals suggest that authorised vehicles should only move in one direction on High Street.
The pedestrianised zone would have a single-entry point at Market Street, with exits via Hythe Street and Lowfield Street, which are already one-way roads.
Businesses in Market Place would continue to receive deliveries from designated loading bays, except for Iceland, which will maintain its current access from Market Street.
The council says the changes aim to create a safer, more enjoyable space for pedestrians, encourage sustainable travel like walking and cycling, and support local businesses by making the High Street a more attractive destination.
